Drug intelligence / Profile preview
dexamethasone + Sinufoam is an investigational drug-device combination consisting of the synthetic corticosteroid **dexamethasone** mixed with **Sinufoam**, an FDA-approved absorbable gelatin-based sinonasal packing material. Developed by researchers at the **University of Calgary**, this formulation is intended for topical application in the ethmoid cavity immediately following endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis. The rationale for the combination is to provide localized, sustained delivery of a potent anti-inflammatory agent to the surgical site to reduce postoperative mucosal inflammation, prevent synechiae (scarring), and promote healing. Dexamethasone functions as a **glucocorticoid receptor** agonist, inhibiting the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (NCT01024075) evaluated the mixture but found no significant clinical benefit in endoscopic outcomes compared to the use of Sinufoam alone.
