Overview
**Dexmedetomidine** is a selective central alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist sedative developed by Orion. It reduces sympathetic noradrenergic signaling, producing cooperative sedation, anxiolysis, and analgesic-sparing effects while generally preserving respiratory drive. In the Jincheng General Hospital study, intravenous dexmedetomidine is being evaluated with lower-limb warming blankets for prevention of postoperative delirium and postoperative chills in elderly patients undergoing posterior spinal surgery under general anesthesia. This perioperative preventive use is investigational and distinct from the drug's established sedation uses.
