Overview

This combination drug formulation, evaluated by Cairo University, is used as an additive to peribulbar anesthesia in patients undergoing glaucoma surgery. It consists of dexmedetomidine, a selective alpha-2 adrenergic agonist, combined with the local anesthetics bupivacaine and lidocaine, and the enzyme hyaluronidase. The primary therapeutic intent of adding dexmedetomidine is to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP), which can otherwise be elevated by the volume of the peribulbar block. Dexmedetomidine also provides sedative and analgesic effects, potentially improving the quality of the block and patient stability during the procedure. Hyaluronidase is included to facilitate the dispersion and absorption of the anesthetic mixture within the peribulbar space.
