Overview

Dexmedetomidine + desflurane is a combination of two anesthetic agents used together during surgical procedures. Dexmedetomidine is a highly selective α2-adrenoceptor agonist with sedative, analgesic, and sympatholytic properties. It provides sedation without significant respiratory depression and can attenuate blood pressure and heart rate responses during surgery[5][1]. Desflurane is a volatile inhalational anesthetic used for the induction and maintenance of general anesthesia; it acts primarily by enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission via GABA-A receptors, glycine receptor agonism, glutamate receptor antagonism, potassium channel induction, and inhibition of certain mitochondrial enzymes[6]. The combination has been studied for its ability to reduce the incidence of postoperative neurocognitive disorders (PND), improve hemodynamic stability during surgery, decrease postoperative pain scores and opioid requirements, as well as potentially shorten hospital stays[2][5]. This regimen is not marketed as a fixed-dose product but represents an evidence-based clinical practice in perioperative medicine.
