Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Dexmedetomidine + hydrocortisone is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents used together for specific clinical indications. Dexmedetomidine is a highly selective alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist with sedative, anxiolytic, and analgesic properties, primarily used for sedation in intensive care and procedural settings. Hydrocortisone is a synthetic glucocorticoid (corticosteroid) with potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects, widely used to treat various inflammatory, allergic, endocrine, and immune-mediated conditions. Recent clinical research has explored the combined use of dexmedetomidine and hydrocortisone to reduce the incidence of postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), leveraging their complementary mechanisms—dexmedetomidine’s sympatholytic/anti-inflammatory actions and hydrocortisone’s suppression of inflammatory mediators[8]. This combination has shown efficacy in reducing POAF incidence with manageable side effects.
