Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Dextran combined with lactated Ringer's solution is used for fluid replacement therapy. Dextran helps restore blood mass during surgical interventions in cases of hypovolemia due to trauma or dehydration. Lactated Ringer's solution provides electrolytes (sodium, potassium, calcium, chloride, and lactate) that are similar to those found in blood. The combination helps in fluid resuscitation, maintaining blood volume, and preventing profound postoperative venous thrombosis. Lactated Ringer's solution produces a metabolic alkalinizing effect as lactate ions are metabolized to carbon dioxide and water, consuming hydrogen cations. Dextran has effects on the hemostatic system, prolonging bleeding time, reducing emboli, reducing platelet adhesiveness, and producing hemodilution.
