Overview
DEXCPM-SR is a sustained-release oral combination medication developed and marketed by Jagsonpal Pharmaceuticals. It contains dextromethorphan hydrobromide, a centrally acting antitussive, and chlorpheniramine maleate, a first-generation alkylamine antihistamine. Dextromethorphan acts on the cough center in the medulla to suppress the cough reflex, primarily through sigma-1 receptor agonism and non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonism. Chlorpheniramine works by competitively antagonizing the H1 receptor, thereby reducing allergic symptoms such as sneezing, rhinorrhea, and watery eyes. This formulation is specifically designed for sustained release to provide prolonged symptomatic relief of dry, non-productive coughs associated with the common cold or upper respiratory allergies.
