Overview

**dextrose monohydrate + heparin sodium** is a sterile, nonpyrogenic solution for intravenous infusion, consisting of heparin sodium (an anticoagulant glycosaminoglycan usually derived from porcine intestinal mucosa) and hydrous dextrose USP in water for injection. Heparin inhibits reactions that lead to the clotting of blood and formation of fibrin clots both in vitro and in vivo, acting mainly by accelerating the interaction of antithrombin III with activated clotting factors (especially Factor Xa and thrombin), thereby blocking their actions[1][5][8]. Dextrose serves as an isotonic vehicle and energy source. This combination product is primarily indicated for the continuous intravenous infusion in situations requiring anticoagulant therapy, especially following initiation by IV heparin sodium. Clinical indications include prophylaxis and treatment of venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, atrial fibrillation with embolization, treatment of consumptive coagulopathies (DIC), prevention of clotting in surgery, and maintenance of patency in intravenous devices[1][3][5][8].
