Overview

Dextrose monohydrate + sodium chloride is a sterile, nonpyrogenic intravenous solution used for the parenteral replenishment of water, electrolytes, and calories. Approved in the United States in 1970, it is a small molecule combination product consisting of D-glucose monohydrate and sodium chloride, available in various concentrations such as 5% dextrose with 0.45% sodium chloride. The solution provides metabolic energy through dextrose, which restores blood glucose levels and provides minimal carbohydrate calories, potentially sparing liver glycogen. The sodium chloride component dissociates into sodium (Na+) and chloride (Cl-) ions, which are the primary electrolytes of the extracellular fluid and are essential for maintaining osmotic pressure and fluid-electrolyte balance. It is indicated for patients requiring parenteral maintenance or replacement of water and electrolyte requirements. The product is manufactured by several companies, including ICU Medical, Fresenius Kabi, and Baxter, and is typically supplied in flexible plastic containers for intravenous administration.
