This combination therapy consists of diammonium glycyrrhizinate, a salt of glycyrrhizic acid with potent anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective properties, and hydrogen-rich water, which acts as a selective antioxidant. Diammonium glycyrrhizinate is known to inhibit High Mobility Group Box 1 (HMGB1) protein and modulate inflammatory cytokine pathways, while molecular hydrogen (H2) dissolved in water helps neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS), particularly hydroxyl radicals, to reduce oxidative stress. This specific regimen was investigated during the COVID-19 pandemic, notably at Huo-Shen-Shan Hospital in Wuhan, China, as a potential treatment to mitigate the cytokine storm and lung injury associated with severe SARS-CoV-2 infection.
