Overview

Diamyd (GAD-alum) is an antigen-specific immunotherapy developed by Diamyd Medical in collaboration with Linköping University for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D). It consists of recombinant human glutamic acid decarboxylase 65 (rhGAD65) formulated with aluminum hydroxide (alum) as an adjuvant. The drug is designed to induce immune tolerance to GAD65, a major autoantigen targeted by autoreactive T lymphocytes in pancreatic beta cells. By modulating the immune response, Diamyd aims to preserve endogenous insulin production and prevent further beta-cell destruction. Clinical development has focused on intralymphatic administration, which has shown significant efficacy in maintaining C-peptide levels and improving glycemic control in a specific subgroup of patients carrying the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) DR3-DQ2 haplotype.
