Overview

This combination therapy, evaluated in the DIABGAD-1 trial, is designed to preserve residual insulin secretion in patients with recent-onset type 1 diabetes. It consists of Diamyd (recombinant human GAD65 formulated with aluminum hydroxide), oral vitamin D, and oral ibuprofen. Diamyd acts as an antigen-specific immunotherapy to induce immune tolerance toward the GAD65 autoantigen, which is a target of autoimmune destruction in type 1 diabetes. Vitamin D and ibuprofen are included to provide additional immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory effects, potentially enhancing the efficacy of the GAD-alum vaccine in protecting pancreatic beta cells.
