Overview

This investigational combination therapy consists of two topical agents: Solaraze (diclofenac sodium 3% gel) and Vaniqa (eflornithine hydrochloride 13.9% cream). It is being evaluated by the University of Alabama at Birmingham as a field therapy for the chemoprevention of actinic keratoses in adults with a history of non-melanoma skin cancer (keratinocytic cancers). Diclofenac is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that acts as a small molecule inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), providing anti-inflammatory and anti-neoplastic properties. Eflornithine, also known as difluoromethylornithine (DFMO), is a small molecule inhibitor of the enzyme ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), which is involved in polyamine synthesis and often upregulated in precancerous skin cells. The combination aims to reduce the burden of actinic keratoses and prevent their progression to squamous cell carcinoma.
