Drug intelligence / Profile preview
A research combination of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) **diclofenac** and the nitric oxide (NO) donor **nitroglycerin**. This combination was used in a mechanistic clinical study (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT02059018) sponsored by Aarhus University to investigate the physiological roles of prostaglandins and nitric oxide in regulating retinal vessel diameter, particularly under hypoxic conditions. Diclofenac acts as a cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitor, blocking prostaglandin synthesis, while nitroglycerin acts as an exogenous source of nitric oxide, inducing vasodilation via the nitric oxide/cGMP pathway. The study aimed to understand the underlying mechanisms of vascular responses in the eye, which are relevant to vision-threatening diseases such as diabetic retinopathy.
