Overview

Digoxin + empagliflozin is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents used primarily in the management of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Digoxin is a cardiac glycoside that increases the force of myocardial contraction (positive inotropy) and decreases heart rate (negative chronotropy) by inhibiting the sodium-potassium ATPase enzyme, leading to increased intracellular calcium in cardiac cells. It is mainly indicated for heart failure and certain arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation[6]. Empagliflozin is a selective sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor that lowers blood glucose by promoting urinary glucose excretion. It also reduces cardiovascular risk, slows progression of chronic kidney disease, and reduces hospitalization for heart failure in patients with type 2 diabetes or established cardiovascular/renal disease[2][3][5]. The combination may be considered when both glycemic control and cardiac support are needed.
