Overview

ICVT Topical Gel (Ionic Contra-Viral Therapy) is an investigational fixed-dose combination drug developed by Maruho Co., Ltd. for the treatment of actinic keratosis (AK) and viral warts. The formulation contains two small-molecule active ingredients: digoxin (0.125% w/w) and furosemide (0.125% w/w). Its mechanism of action is based on the dual inhibition of potassium (K+) influx, which is critical for the replication of DNA viruses and the survival of hyperproliferative cells. Digoxin acts as an inhibitor of the Na+/K+-ATPase pump, while furosemide inhibits the Na+-K+-2Cl− co-transporter-1 (NKCC1). By disrupting the intracellular ionic balance required for viral DNA synthesis and cellular proliferation, ICVT aims to treat pre-cancerous lesions and HPV-induced warts with minimal systemic exposure. The therapy has been evaluated in Phase 2 clinical trials for actinic keratosis and has demonstrated a favorable safety and tolerability profile.
