Overview

Dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine + azithromycin is an investigational combination regimen evaluated for intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy (IPTp). It combines dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DP), an artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT), with azithromycin, a broad-spectrum macrolide antibiotic. The regimen is designed to prevent malaria and sexually transmitted or reproductive tract infections (STIs/RTIs) in pregnant women, particularly in regions with high resistance to the standard treatment, sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine. The combination was studied in the Phase 3 IMPROVE trial led by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, which compared monthly IPTp-DP alone or with a single course of azithromycin against the standard of care in East Africa.
