Overview
Amebyl is a synthetic, fixed-dose combination anti-infective medication containing the tissue amebicide metronidazole and the luminal amebicide diiodohydroxyquinoline (also known as iodoquinol). Developed by Offenbach Farmacéutica Mexicana, it is indicated for the treatment of intestinal and extraintestinal amebiasis (caused by *Entamoeba histolytica*) as well as giardiasis. Metronidazole acts systemically by diffusing into microbial cells where its nitro group is reduced, forming highly reactive free radicals that interact with DNA, causing strand breakage and cell death. Diiodohydroxyquinoline acts locally within the intestinal lumen, where it is believed to chelate essential metal ions required for parasite metabolism and disrupt DNA function. This dual-action approach ensures comprehensive eradication of both luminal and systemic protozoal pathogens.
