Overview

A compounded oral rinse containing diphenhydramine (an antihistamine with local anesthetic properties), lidocaine (a local anesthetic), and antacids (commonly aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide, as found in Maalox or Mylanta). This combination is most commonly known as "magic mouthwash" and is used to provide symptomatic relief from oral mucositis pain, particularly in patients undergoing cancer therapy such as radiotherapy for head and neck cancers. Diphenhydramine reduces swelling and provides mild anesthesia; lidocaine numbs the mucosa to relieve pain; antacids help coat the sores for additional protection. The formulation is typically prepared by compounding pharmacies according to a physician’s prescription[1][2][4][6][7].
