Overview

The diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis whole-cell hepatitis B Hib vaccine is a pentavalent combination vaccine developed by Bio-Manguinhos/Fiocruz in partnership with Instituto Butantan for the Brazilian National Immunization Program. It provides active immunization against five major pediatric diseases: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), hepatitis B, and infections caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), such as meningitis and pneumonia. The vaccine formulation consists of diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, inactivated whole-cell Bordetella pertussis, recombinant hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), and Hib capsular polysaccharide (polyribosylribitol phosphate) conjugated to tetanus toxoid (PRP-T). It is administered as an intramuscular suspension, typically in a three-dose primary series for infants at 2, 4, and 6 months of age. The Hib component technology was originally transferred to Bio-Manguinhos from GSK Biologicals.
