Overview

DTwP-HepB-Hib is a pentavalent combination vaccine designed for pediatric immunization, providing protection against five major infectious diseases: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), hepatitis B, and invasive Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) infections. The vaccine formulation typically includes purified diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, inactivated whole-cell Bordetella pertussis organisms, recombinant hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), and Hib capsular polysaccharide (polyribosylribitol phosphate) conjugated to a carrier protein, such as tetanus toxoid. By combining these antigens into a single injection, the vaccine simplifies immunization schedules, reduces the number of injections required for infants, and improves coverage in global health programs. It is widely utilized in low- and middle-income countries and is a cornerstone of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) supported by organizations like Gavi and UNICEF.
