The diphtheria + pertussis + tetanus (DPT) vaccine is a trivalent combination biological product used for active immunization against three serious bacterial diseases: diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), and tetanus. It consists of diphtheria and tetanus toxoids—detoxified bacterial toxins that induce the production of neutralizing antibodies—and pertussis antigens, which can be either inactivated whole-cell Bordetella pertussis (DTwP) or acellular components (DTaP) such as pertussis toxoid and filamentous hemagglutinin. The vaccine is a fundamental part of the WHO/UNICEF Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) and is typically administered to infants in a multi-dose series. In a cluster-randomized trial conducted in rural Rajasthan, India, by the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the vaccine was used to study the impact of reliable outreach camps and non-cash incentives on childhood immunization rates.
