Overview

This combination vaccine is a pentavalent immunization agent designed to protect against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) infections. It typically contains diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, acellular or whole-cell pertussis antigens, and a Hib capsular polysaccharide conjugated to a carrier protein. The vaccine was the subject of the VacciPrema trial conducted by the Central Hospital, Nancy, France, which evaluated the immunogenicity and efficacy of a two-dose versus a three-dose primary vaccination schedule in very preterm infants (born at less than 33 weeks gestational age). It works by inducing active immunity through the production of specific antibodies against the toxins of *Corynebacterium diphtheriae* and *Clostridium tetani*, the antigens of *Bordetella pertussis*, and the polyribosylribitol phosphate (PRP) capsule of *Haemophilus influenzae* type b.
