Overview

The diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis whole-cell vaccine + inactivated poliovirus vaccine + Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine (DTPw-IPV-Hib) is a pentavalent pediatric combination vaccine. Developed by the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), it was historically the cornerstone of the Netherlands' national immunization program. The vaccine contains diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, killed whole-cell Bordetella pertussis bacteria, inactivated poliovirus (Salk strains), and the Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) capsular polysaccharide conjugated to a carrier protein. Unlike acellular pertussis vaccines (DTPa), the whole-cell component (DTPw) contains the entire killed bacterium, which has been shown in comparative studies to elicit a broader and more persistent cellular immune response. It is indicated for the active immunization of infants and children against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, poliomyelitis, and invasive Hib disease.
