Overview

Diphtheria toxoid + tetanus toxoid + pertussis vaccine + hepatitis B vaccine + haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine (DTwP-HepB-Hib) is a pentavalent combination vaccine used for the active immunization of infants and young children. It provides protection against five major infectious diseases: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), hepatitis B, and invasive infections caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b. The vaccine typically contains diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, inactivated whole-cell Bordetella pertussis, recombinant hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), and Hib capsular polysaccharide conjugated to a carrier protein (such as tetanus toxoid). Administered via intramuscular injection, it is a cornerstone of pediatric immunization schedules globally, particularly in low- and middle-income countries supported by the WHO Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), as it reduces the number of injections required and improves healthcare delivery efficiency.
