Taurine is being investigated as an adjunctive therapy to standard disease-modifying treatments (DMTs) for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). Developed by the Sichuan Academy of Medical Sciences, this combination therapy aims to enhance remyelination and neuroprotection. Taurine, a naturally occurring amino acid and endogenous metabolite, is thought to work by reversing metabolic pathway flux and increasing the availability of serine, a critical building block for glycosphingolipids that constitute the myelin sheath. The Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT07263607) evaluates the efficacy of oral taurine supplementation in reducing MRI lesions, decreasing relapse rates, and slowing disability progression in patients already receiving stable DMT therapy.
