Overview

Dithranol (also known as anthralin) combined with salicylic acid is a topical pharmaceutical preparation primarily used in the treatment of psoriasis. Dithranol acts by inhibiting DNA synthesis and reducing the rapid proliferation of keratinocytes, which are characteristic features of psoriatic lesions. Salicylic acid serves as a keratolytic agent, helping to break down keratin clumps, remove dead skin cells, and soften plaques. Additionally, salicylic acid enhances the stability and penetration of dithranol into the skin, thereby increasing its efficacy[2][3][8]. This combination is typically formulated in creams or ointments at varying concentrations (commonly 0.1%–2% for dithranol; higher strengths may be used under medical supervision)[3][7]. The main indication is moderate to severe chronic plaque psoriasis when other topical treatments are ineffective or unsuitable[7]. Side effects can include local irritation and staining of skin or clothing; high concentrations increase risk for chemical burns if not properly supervised[3].
