Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) + arachidonic acid (ARA) + milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) is a specialized nutritional combination primarily utilized in infant formulas to support brain development and immune health. DHA and ARA are long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) that serve as critical structural components of the brain and retina, influencing synaptic plasticity and visual acuity. MFGM is a complex biological fraction derived from milk that contains a variety of phospholipids, sphingolipids (such as sphingomyelin and gangliosides), and bioactive proteins (including lactadherin and butyrophilin). Clinical studies, notably those conducted by Mead Johnson Nutrition, have demonstrated that the addition of MFGM to formula containing DHA and ARA can improve neurodevelopmental scores and reduce the incidence of common pediatric infections, such as otitis media, by more closely mimicking the composition and functional benefits of human breast milk.
