Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) + fish oil is a lipid-based nutritional intervention used to supplement omega-3 fatty acid levels. DHA is a long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) that serves as a primary structural component of the human brain, cerebral cortex, skin, and retina. In clinical contexts, such as pregnancy complicated by Type 2 diabetes, DHA-enriched fish oil is administered to rectify red cell membrane lipid anomalies and prevent the natural decline of maternal DHA levels during gestation. The mechanism of action involves the incorporation of these fatty acids into cell membrane phospholipids, which modulates membrane fluidity, influences cell signaling pathways, and provides precursors for the synthesis of anti-inflammatory mediators like resolvins and protectins. It also acts as a ligand for nuclear receptors involved in lipid and glucose metabolism.
