Dolutegravir + emtricitabine (DTG + FTC) is a two-drug antiretroviral regimen used in the treatment of HIV-1 infection. Dolutegravir is an integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI) that blocks the integration of viral DNA into the host genome, thereby inhibiting HIV replication. Emtricitabine is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that inhibits reverse transcription by incorporating into viral DNA and causing chain termination. While both drugs are widely used as part of combination antiretroviral therapy, their use together as a dual regimen has been investigated for maintenance therapy and simplification strategies in people living with HIV. Clinical studies have explored this combination as an alternative to standard triple-drug regimens, particularly for patients who may benefit from reduced drug exposure or have contraindications to other NRTIs[7]. Emtricitabine shares similar efficacy and resistance profiles with lamivudine but has a longer intracellular half-life and greater in vitro potency[7].
