Antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimen consisting of dolutegravir (an integrase strand transfer inhibitor) combined with a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) backbone of tenofovir and either emtricitabine or lamivudine. This specific combination was evaluated by Fundación Huésped in the TRANSViiV pilot study (NCT03033836) to assess its efficacy, safety, and retention in care among treatment-naïve transgender women living with HIV-1. Dolutegravir works by blocking the integrase enzyme, which prevents the viral genome from integrating into the host cell's DNA, while tenofovir, emtricitabine, and lamivudine act as chain terminators during the reverse transcription of viral RNA into DNA.
