donepezil + risperidone

Donepezil + risperidone is a combination of two pharmaceutical drugs, each with distinct mechanisms of action. Donepezil is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor primarily used to treat symptoms of Alzheimer's disease by increasing acetylcholine levels in the brain, thereby enhancing cholinergic neurotransmission. Risperidone is an atypical antipsychotic that acts mainly as an antagonist at dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors, and it is used for the management of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and behavioral disturbances in dementia. The combination may be considered in patients with dementia who exhibit both cognitive impairment (addressed by donepezil) and behavioral or psychotic symptoms (addressed by risperidone). However, this combination can increase the risk of central nervous system depression and extrapyramidal side effects; caution and close monitoring are advised when these drugs are co-administered[1][2][3][7]. Pharmacokinetic studies suggest no significant interaction at standard doses in healthy adults[4][8], but elderly patients may be more susceptible to adverse effects.
