Overview
Donepezil + sodium valproate is a combination of two small molecule drugs used together, primarily studied for the management of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Donepezil is an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor that increases acetylcholine levels in the brain, thereby improving cognitive function and memory. Sodium valproate is an anticonvulsant and mood stabilizer that increases GABAergic neurotransmission and blocks voltage-gated sodium channels, contributing to its antiepileptic and mood-stabilizing effects. The combination has been shown to be effective for BPSD in Alzheimer's disease, with studies suggesting it may be more cost-effective than some alternatives[1][5][8].
