Overview

This cellular therapy approach, developed by Dr. Jeffrey Veale at UCLA, is designed to induce immune tolerance in HLA-identical sibling kidney transplant recipients. The treatment involves the infusion of donor-derived, G-CSF mobilized, and Miltenyi-enriched CD34+ hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs) and CD3+ T cells. This infusion follows a specific conditioning regimen consisting of Total Lymphoid Irradiation (TLI) and rabbit anti-thymocyte globulin (rATG). The primary therapeutic goal is to establish stable mixed chimerism—a state where donor and recipient immune systems coexist—which allows for the complete withdrawal of maintenance immunosuppressive medications while preventing kidney transplant rejection.
