By establishing a state of transient or persistent mixed chimerism, the regimen aims to "re-educate" the recipient's immune system to recognize the donor organ as self. The primary clinical objective is to facilitate the complete and safe withdrawal of maintenance immunosuppressive drugs, thereby avoiding long-term medication toxicities while preventing graft rejection.
