Donor mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center for the treatment of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). These multipotent stromal cells are derived from the bone marrow of HLA-identical sibling donors and are culture-expanded prior to administration. MSCs possess potent immunomodulatory properties, including the ability to suppress T-cell activation and modulate various immune responses, which are critical in addressing the dysregulated immune attack on recipient tissues characteristic of GVHD. The therapy is primarily being evaluated in patients with steroid-refractory acute or chronic GVHD following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. This treatment is currently being studied in early-phase clinical trials to assess safety and efficacy in transplant recipients.
