Donor mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are an allogeneic cell therapy developed by the Masonic Cancer Center at the University of Minnesota for the treatment of severe forms of epidermolysis bullosa (EB), particularly recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB). The therapy involves the serial infusion of MSCs derived from healthy related or unrelated donors following an allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant. These MSCs are intended to provide biochemical correction by serving as a source of type VII collagen, which is essential for anchoring the epidermis to the dermis. Additionally, the MSCs are hypothesized to enhance the safety and efficacy of the transplant and promote the healing of chronic wounds and blisters.
