DOX@PEG-HAuNS is a multifunctional nanomedicine consisting of the chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin (DOX) loaded onto polyethylene glycol (PEG)-coated hollow gold nanospheres (HAuNS). It is designed for combined photothermal therapy (PTT) and chemotherapy. Upon exposure to near-infrared (NIR) laser light, the hollow gold nanospheres convert light into heat, causing localized photothermal ablation of tumor cells. This heat generation, along with the acidic tumor microenvironment, triggers the rapid release of the loaded doxorubicin, providing a synergistic therapeutic effect. Developed by MD Anderson Cancer Center in collaboration with Ocean Nanotech, DOX@PEG-HAuNS has been investigated in preclinical models for the treatment of various cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma, breast cancer, and ovarian cancer.
