Overview

Doxifluridine is a second-generation fluoropyrimidine carbamate and a prodrug of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). It is selectively converted to 5-FU by the enzyme thymidine phosphorylase, which is frequently overexpressed in tumor tissues, thereby disrupting DNA and RNA synthesis and inhibiting tumor growth. Mistletoe extract (Viscum album) is a botanical extract containing biologically active compounds such as mistletoe lectins (ML-I, II, and III) and viscotoxins. It is used as an adjuvant in oncology to modulate the immune system, induce apoptosis in cancer cells, and mitigate the side effects of chemotherapy. The combination of doxifluridine and mistletoe extract has been primarily investigated in East Asia, particularly South Korea, as a postoperative or palliative treatment for gastric cancer to enhance therapeutic efficacy and improve patient quality of life.
