Overview

Doxil + carboplatin is a combination chemotherapy regimen consisting of intravenous pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (Doxil) and intraperitoneal carboplatin. This specific combination and route of administration (IV/IP) was investigated by the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center as a salvage therapy for patients with platinum-sensitive recurrent ovarian cancer. Doxorubicin is an anthracycline that works by intercalating DNA and inhibiting topoisomerase II, while carboplatin is a platinum-based antineoplastic agent that causes DNA cross-linking, collectively inhibiting DNA synthesis and cell division in tumor cells. The liposomal formulation of doxorubicin (Doxil) is designed to improve the drug's pharmacokinetic profile and reduce cardiotoxicity compared to conventional doxorubicin.
