Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Doxorubicin hydrochloride (liposomal) is a liposomal formulation of the anthracycline chemotherapy agent doxorubicin hydrochloride, developed and marketed by Cosmas Pharmaceuticals. The active ingredient, doxorubicin, works by intercalating into DNA and inhibiting topoisomerase II, which causes DNA damage and subsequently leads to cancer cell death. The liposomal encapsulation significantly alters the drug's pharmacokinetics and toxicity profile compared to conventional doxorubicin, allowing for improved tumor targeting and a reduction in cardiotoxicity. This formulation is administered intravenously and is indicated for the treatment of ovarian cancer (specifically after the failure of platinum-based chemotherapy), breast cancer, and AIDS-related Kaposi's sarcoma. It represents Cosmas Pharmaceuticals' version of the established liposomal doxorubicin formulation class, which includes products such as Doxil and Caelyx.
