Overview

Doxyferm is an investigational combination therapy consisting of the tetracycline antibiotic doxycycline and the bile acid ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA). It is being developed primarily by researchers at Umeå University, led by Professor Ole B. Suhr, for the treatment of transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTR), including both cardiomyopathy and hereditary neuropathic forms (such as the Swedish V30M variant). Doxycycline acts by disrupting and clearing amyloid fibrils, while UDCA provides synergistic cytoprotective and anti-apoptotic effects to mitigate tissue damage. The combination has been evaluated in Phase II clinical trials (e.g., NCT02016365) to assess its safety and efficacy in halting disease progression over a 12-month treatment period.
