Overview

DPC 083 + nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors is a combination antiretroviral therapy for HIV. DPC 083 is an investigational second-generation non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) developed to inhibit HIV-1 replication—including strains resistant to first-generation NNRTIs such as nevirapine and efavirenz—by non-competitively binding to HIV-1 reverse transcriptase and altering its enzyme activity. Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) are a class of antiretroviral drugs that act as faulty substrates for reverse transcriptase, causing premature termination of viral DNA synthesis. The regimen is evaluated both in treatment-naive and NNRTI-experienced HIV-positive patients, typically alongside backbone NRTIs such as zidovudine (AZT) and lamivudine (3TC).
