Overview

Dronabinol + nabilone is a combination of two synthetic cannabinoids, both structurally related to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary psychoactive component of cannabis. Dronabinol is a synthetic form of delta-9-THC, while nabilone is a synthetic cannabinoid and an analog of dronabinol. Both drugs act primarily as partial agonists at the Cannabinoid-1 (CB1) and Cannabinoid-2 (CB2) receptors in the central nervous system and immune cells, respectively. They are used for their antiemetic properties, particularly in treating nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy when conventional treatments have failed. Dronabinol also has indications for anorexia associated with weight loss in AIDS patients[5][8]. Both agents share similar pharmacological profiles but differ slightly in onset and duration; dronabinol acts faster while nabilone has a longer duration[8]. The combination would theoretically provide additive or synergistic effects on cannabinoid receptor-mediated pathways.
