This combination immunization regimen consists of a hexavalent vaccine (targeting diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, poliomyelitis, hepatitis B, and Haemophilus influenzae type b) and a 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13). It is used for routine childhood immunization to induce active immunity against seven major pathogens. The hexavalent component typically contains diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, acellular pertussis antigens, inactivated poliovirus, recombinant hepatitis B surface antigen, and conjugated Hib capsular polysaccharide. The PCV13 component contains capsular polysaccharides from 13 serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae conjugated to a carrier protein. In clinical research conducted at the University Hospital Basel, this specific combination was evaluated for its cardiorespiratory safety profile, specifically investigating heart rate variability as a predictor for apnea and bradycardia of prematurity (AOP) in very preterm and very low birth weight infants.
