Overview

DTwP-HepB-Hib vaccine is a pentavalent (5-in-1) combination vaccine that provides immunization against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), hepatitis B, and Haemophilus influenzae type b. It contains diphtheria toxoid, tetanus toxoid, whole-cell pertussis antigens (wP), hepatitis B surface antigen, and Hib polysaccharide conjugate. The mechanism of action is immunostimulation—each component induces an immune response to its respective pathogen. This vaccine is primarily used in infants and young children as part of routine immunization schedules in many low- and middle-income countries. It has been shown to be safe and effective as a three-dose primary series[1][4][5]. Several formulations have received WHO prequalification or regulatory approval; for example, Quintanrix was approved by the European Medicines Agency in 2004 but later withdrawn[1]. The product is widely procured by UNICEF for global child vaccination programs[3].
