This combination therapy is an experimental treatment for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) developed by the Fundación Universidad Católica de Valencia San Vicente Mártir. It consists of the repurposed drug dutasteride (identified by its ATC code G04CB02) and liposomal formulations of the polyphenols curcumin and resveratrol. Dutasteride is a dual inhibitor of type 1 and type 2 5α-reductase enzymes, traditionally used for benign prostatic hyperplasia and androgenetic alopecia, but investigated here for its potential neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects in the context of motor neuron disease. Curcumin and resveratrol are included for their potent antioxidant properties, with liposomal delivery employed to enhance their bioavailability. The therapy is currently being evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT04654689) to assess its impact on muscle activation and functional decline in ALS patients.
