E-CEL UVEC (AB-207) is an experimental cell therapy consisting of allogeneic human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) that have been genetically modified with the E4ORF1 gene, a pro-survival gene derived from adenovirus. This genetic modification is intended to enhance the stability, growth, and regenerative capacity of the endothelial cells. Developed by Weill Medical College of Cornell University in collaboration with Angiocrine Bioscience, the therapy is designed to treat chronic anal fissures that are refractory to standard medical treatments such as topical vasodilators or botulinum toxin injections. The therapy is administered via percutaneous injection directly into the tissue surrounding the fissure. The mechanism of action relies on the ability of these engineered endothelial cells to promote vascular repair and accelerate the natural healing process of the damaged tissue.
