This combination vaccine utilizes virus-like particles (VLPs) derived from the glycoprotein (GP) and matrix protein (VP40) of Ebola virus (EBOV) and Marburg virus (MARV). VLPs are non-infectious, as they lack the viral genome, but they mimic the authentic virus's structure and symmetry, making them highly immunogenic. They trigger both humoral (antibody) and cellular (T-cell) immune responses. This specific combination is designed to provide broad protection against multiple filoviruses, which cause severe hemorrhagic fevers. Development has primarily been led by Integrated BioTherapeutics in collaboration with USAMRIID, often utilizing a recombinant protein expression system (like baculovirus/insect cells) to produce the particles. The vaccine is typically formulated with an adjuvant to enhance the immune response.
