Overview

EcN::ttr is a genetically engineered microbiome medicine (GEMM) developed by Melius MicroBiomics for veterinary applications in pork production. The product consists of the probiotic bacterium *E. coli* Nissle 1917 (EcN) modified with tetrathionate respiration (ttr) capability using the company's BioPersist™ technology platform. This engineering allows the probiotic to utilize tetrathionate—a metabolite produced by the host during intestinal inflammation—as an alternative electron acceptor for anaerobic respiration. This provides the engineered strain with a significant competitive growth advantage in the inflamed gut environment where native probiotics often fail. Administered as an oral feed additive, EcN::ttr is designed to mitigate post-weaning stress in pigs by reducing diarrhea, infection, and mortality, while simultaneously improving feed efficiency and average daily weight gain by modulating the porcine gut microbiome and reducing intestinal permeability (leaky gut).
